There are several hiking trails and circular routes you can walk in Brecon, all with different levels of difficulty. The town of Llandovery owes its origin to its position at an important bridging point on the River Tywi. This was recognised by the Romans who established a fort, and later by the Normans whose ruined castle can still be seen. The Memorial Chapel in Stryd y Bont was built as a memorial to the hymnist William Williams Pantycelyn.The Castle has a history both as a Norman and a Welsh stronghold, the round tower or keep, still remains along with a shell wall of 13th century date. A small stream, the Dyfri, was diverted to form a water-filled ditch around the castle. It is an old droving town with a rich history and the pretty market square is surrounded by characterful Georgian buildings, built on the profits of the 19th-century wool trade. The town centre has a large range of shops and craft outlets as well as places to eat and drink or to stay and it’s also flat - making it very accessible to all. It is well worth exploring the streets of our town, you will find that Llandovery still offers a warm welcome to visitors. Another nod to the town’s history is a huge steel statue of Llywelyn ap Gruffydd Fychan, overlooking the town. The name of the town derives from Llan ymlith y dyfroedd, meaning "church enclosure amid the waters", i. e. between the Tywi and the Afon Brân just upstream of their confluence.
