About this deal

If you are looking for a lawn spreader that will evenly apply lawn products, the Scotts Miracle-Gro EvenGreen Drop Spreader is an excellent choice. The brand names associated with this quality product are world-renowned in the gardening field. The adjustable handlebar is a plus point so you don’t have to hunch over or stretch up when you’re pushing this spreader. Einhell GE-US Power X-Change Lawn Feed Spreader (best battery powered lawn feed spreader) [personally tested and proven] Specification: Spreading width: 5 metres , Capacity: 3.3 liters , Recommended lawn area: up to around 800 m² , When to use: year-round use Creating the perfect lawn takes time and effort. It’s not just a case of planting grass seed and waiting for the sun and rain to do their jobs. In an earlier article I showed you how to make and level a lawn from scratch. This time I just need some grass seed down for the kids to play on as we are going to do a major landscape project and I got lazy. I’ll admit it. I sent the kids around with a bag and handfuls of grass seed. It was a washout 😀 (the UK almost always is!). The lawn is completely patchy – and in fairness, the birds got their share of my seed but it would have still been a problem. So this time, armed with more seed, and the best lawn spreader I am testing and showing you how much more accurate a lawn spreader really is as opposed to hand seeding. In fact that’s a bit misleading – my daughter is going to demonstrate for you 🙂 My daughter helping me test our EverGreen 18920 Easy Spreader Plus Drop spreaders are best for lawns that contain lots of landscaping elements, such as flowers beds and narrow green strips, that need you to make tight turns. Handheld spreaders

Simply adjust the setting according to the product you are using (see our spreader settings table) and away you go. There’s an on/off grip handle so starting and stopping the application of the granules is easy and accurate when you get to the end of a strip. Easy application of granular lawn products and takes minimal effort to keep your lawn lush and healthy. The feeder hole in the bottom of the 18 litre capacity hopper is opened and closed using an ergonomically designed trigger found on the handlebars. I really liked the way this worked and felt very natural when you used it. If you only have a small lawn, and don’t mind walking around a little to spread your fertiliser, you could do a lot worse than spending a few quid on this handheld Gardena lawn feed spreader. It may not be quite as sophisticated as a rotary spreader, but it does keep everything under control. Fortunately, Evergreen’s Scotts EasyGreen Rotary Spreaderstrikes a good compromise between practicality and affordability. Medium-sized lawn areas. Always use a spreader for an even and easy application of granular lawn seed and lawn care products. When to use The main thing to watch out for are corners – it can be easy to accidentally distribute too much product. The drop spreader is not easy to ‘turn off’ at a corner because the aperture only closes when the yellow indicator is pointing to ‘0’. This is difficult to change whilst in the middle of distributing product.

Sophisticated dispensing mechanism with adjustable settings to drop just the right amount for your task and lawn situation. The Agri-Fab 45-0462 Push-Type Smartspreader is a large capacity model that is ideal for large scale seeding, fertilising or salt spreading. The spreader can hold 58kg of product and distribute it around the lawn with ease and minimal waste. You have control over the settings of the spreader. This lets you work with different products whether reseeding a large lawn, spreading fertilizer or even spreading grit salt in winter. This Smartspreader works just as effectively with all granular products. Specification: Spreading width: 122-340 cm , Capacity: N/A , Recommended lawn area: least 100 m² , When to use: March to November The advantage of a drop spreader is that you have much more control over where the contents are being put down, and this makes them better for using on the edges of lawns or near garden ponds so you don’t contaminate the water accidentally with chemicals.

This model also features the folding handlebar to make storage easier and to get a comfortable working angle, but again, the height can’t be changed. And it’s not only fertiliser that can be used with this spreader. You can also use it for distributing road salt on your drive and path in winter, for spreading seeds, and even sand. The most efficient way to feed the lawn because all of the fertiliser is delivered directly on to the lawn

Read on below and our buyer’s guide will try to provide the answers to these questions and more. Comparing the types of lawn feed spreader Walk up and down the lawn, The Miracle-Gro® Drop Spreader creates a strip of granules directly below the moving spreader which is approximately 45cm (18in) wide. When returning, align the arrow on the hopper above the tyre marks made in the previous strip. It’s worth mentioning that the manufacturer recommends using this spreader with Scotts Lawn Builder, Miracle-Gro and Evergreen lawn care and/or grass seed products only. However, it will work just fine with any brand of grass seed products and fertilisers. Pros This lawn spreader is made of polyethylene which is a durable and easy to clean material. When you are done working, just hose the spreader down and store it – it’s that easy. It comes with a spreading width of over three metres and is suitable for areas up to 2,300m 2 The spreader rests on 25cm air tires that have good traction and don’t leave imprints on the lawn. There are some of us who would prefer to use a rotary spreader but only have a small garden and are worried about getting unwanted chemicals in places we don’t want them. Even when walking at the slowest pace, the larger broadcast spreaders still distribute the contents of the hopper and some distance and it can be hard to control where it goes in a small or narrow yard. There also doesn’t seem to be that much difference between the four different spread settings. I mean, there is some difference, but not enough to make it really worth having it there in the first place. With a hopper that can hold 23 kilograms of feed, you shouldn’t have to keep stopping to refill too often, nor do you have to worry about clog-inducing contaminants getting mixed in there thanks to a hopper screen and hopper cover being included in the price. This means you can even use it in wet weather, as long as you have a good set of wellies and a raincoat. This product isn’t perfect, and there are a couple of little niggles such as it being hard to get the last bit of feeder to fall through the hole due to the shape of the feeder, not being able to use it for spreading road salt, and the fact that it takes a while to get the settings and walking speed right. I was not so happy with the controls to adjust the spreading quantity though, which is something you have to grab and slide across the bottom of the trigger. It’s not that it doesn’t work, or is particularly that bad, I just think it could have been done better, as it is in many other lower-cost products, and I expected more from a brand like Gardena. Calculate the area of the lawn in square metres by multiplying the length by the width (1 large stride = 1 metre approx)

These are small gripes though, and I shouldn’t complain too much about something that costs under fifteen quid, and overall it is a good little spreader and certainly worth a look. Unlike our other Scotts product review, this one is a drop spreader and works in a slightly different way. Where a rotary spreader will use a turntable to throw the fertiliser, weed killer, etc. out in multiple directions, a drop spreader distributes the contents of the hopper straight down. As always, there are things I didn’t think were so great. For example, the handle that you turn on the side to operate the spreader is very small and has to be pinched between two fingers. I would have much preferred a decent-sized handle like on the Gardena handheld model instead. Specification: Spreading width: N/A (very small) , Capacity: 3 liters , Recommended lawn area: least 100 m² , When to use: N/A Drop spreader allows for accurate application of granular products so you don;t put seeds or fertiliser where you don’t want them

My Top Recommended Lawn Spreaders

However, this article gives you recommended settings for many of our products depending on which spreader you’re using. If yours isn’t listed or the suggested settings don’t match your spreader , then please let us know using the comments below. I’ll be happy to help in any way I can. As you can imagine, there’s a bit of a workout involved in pushing this fertiliser spreader around, especially when it’s full; the unit alone weighs 12.3 kg. However, it’s a great option for gardeners who don’t want to keep stopping and starting to top up the spreader. Generally speaking, it’s not as hard to push a broadcast spreader as a drop spreader. The speed of distribution is determined by your pace. These are the two main types of lawn spreader available. Depending on your garden, and preferences, one may suit you better than the other. Both spread grass seed and fertiliser. Rotary Spreaders
