I first created this fun animal alphabet for my oldest daughter when she was a toddler for her and her friends. I then developed it to be phonetically correct and started, on request, to paint personalised bedroom name pictures using the animal letters as presents for friends and family. As you will see, each letter of the alphabet is formed by an animal whose name begins with that letter. I also continued to write “grown-up” songs and perform them in folk clubs and on the radio, and have recently released two CDs of these songs. Starbird is an original fable about freedom and love. How many other animal words can you think of, to go with each letter? Alphabet book written and illustrated by Akili and Me by Ubongo I love that it’s an alphabet book connected to animals! My only wish would be that it the story had been a little simpler, and not tried to connect each animal to the next. Some of the connections were a little tenuous and the book didn’t need them anyway in my opinion! Funnily enough, I find it harder to write not in verse, though I feel I am now getting the hang of it! My novel THE GIANTS AND THE JONESES is going to be made into a film by the same team who made the Harry Potter movies, and I have written three books of stories about the anarchic PRINCESS MIRROR-BELLE who appears from the mirror and disrupts the life of an otherwise ordinary eight-year-old. I have just finished writing a novel for teenagers. She was the UK Children’s Laureate 2011–13 and has been honoured with a CBE for Services to Literature.

Ditto loves flaps and was more interested in seeing what is behind each flap than the related text but this is a book that will grow with the child and can be read and enjoyed over the years to come. Before Malcolm and I had our three sons we used to go busking together and I would write special songs for each country; the best one was in Italian about pasta. Dot loved this book and her favourite part was guessing what animal came next. We have read this together many times and she is enjoying the accomplishment of getting more and more animals correct.
