The myth of bad British teeth - BBC News

Austin Powers has been used for advertising numerous products and endorsements, such as Pepsi Cola. [16] He is a womanizing, hard partying British spy embodying the Swinging London psyche and hippie culture of the 1960s who, with his nemesis Dr. Evil, was frozen in a cryonics experiment. The series' humor follows his attempts to adjust to the modern world as he continues to try to save it from terrorism. Heavily influenced by British pop culture growing up, Mike Myers has claimed his British-born father was the inspiration behind Austin Powers. [12] Other media [ edit ]

Abstract

I really love seeing our work on the screen. I enjoy seeing the big picture with the work we’ve done combined with what all the makeup artists and the effects shops have been able to do. For Interview with a Vampire, we did 150 sets of vampire teeth for the main six characters [including] Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. They wanted short sets, long sets, biting teeth… I’ll tell you, after that was over, I never wanted to see another set of vampire teeth again! What are “breakaway” teeth?

Gary Archer Cosmetic dentistry often involves the work of skilled dental laboratory technicians who know just how to craft highly realistic replacement teeth, for a drastically improved smile. But sometimes improvement is not exactly the goal, especially in Hollywood. Today we’re north of Hollywood at AA Dental Lab, the laboratory of Gary Archer, a lab technician known for creating the worst smiles you’ve ever seen on the big screen. Ooh. No, I mean it. I really think those braces look good on you. Thank you. [MUSIC PLAYING] So can you explain to us what a dental technician really does? Well, a dental technician actually is part of the dental industry. What we do, we fabricate and we construct all of the dentures, the partials, crowns, bridges, orthodontic appliances that are prescribed by a normal dentist. The dentist does the clinical work. We do the technical work. And the collaboration between dentist and lab technician gives the patient a beautiful smile. Usually, doctors want to make a smile more beautiful, and you’re making them more ugly. So did that take a while to get used to? Yes, it actually is something that - it goes against the grain of every technician. It goes against the grain of what we are taught. Everything that we know has to be thrown out the window, because what we’re doing, we’re getting Hollywood A listers with really nice smiles, and we’ve got to make them look horrible. I’ve created some absolute nightmarish looking teeth. I’m sure you’ve seen some of the pictures that we’ve done. We’ve created meth mouth. We’ve created gaps. We’ve created that fly out of people mouth on camera, when someone gets hit in the face. We did a whole line of Hollywood braces. You’ve seen those on Drew Barrymore. Cameron Diaz wore them in Charlie’s Angels. You’ve seen them in hundreds of different television shows and commercials. We did 150 sets of vampire teeth for the main six characters. Interview with the Vampire, they wanted short sets, long sets, biting sets. We made 150 sets. And I’ll tell you, after that was over I never wanted to see another set of vampire teeth again. What was your favorite movie transformation that you’ve worked on? My all time favorite has got to be Mike Myers, working with Mike Myers and doing the Austin Powers series. Well, since you’ve been frozen, there have been fabulous advances in the field of dentistry. What do mean? Nothing. Mike came to see us, and decided that we wanted to have prototypical 1960s bad British teeth, the gaps and the stains. And Mike took those, and really made them famous. Oh, behave. Yeah. Yeah, baby! Yeah. Do you still practice regular dentistry, where you make people look good? Or would you rather do this? Oh, yeah. No, I would never give up the regular side of the dental lab industry. We’ve been doing this for too many years. And seeing patients with happy smiles is really a very, very satisfying thing for me. [MUSIC PLAYING] Quincy Jones, musician, composer I wrote “Soul Bossa Nova” in 20 minutes 55 years ago, and it just keeps resurrecting itself. I worked with Mike when I hosted SNL in 1990. We became friends, so when they reached out to ask for permission to use the song, I happily agreed. And I said: ‘Yeah, seems like a good idea until something else comes up.’ But nothing else ever did.

So when I read the script, I could see him being the character. And he made it really easy for us. He came in and did the character — he wasn’t wearing a costume or anything — and really fleshed it out for us. Sir Austin Danger Powers KBE [1] is a fictional character from the Austin Powers series of films, and is created and portrayed by Mike Myers. He is the protagonist of Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997), The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999) and Austin Powers in Goldmember (2002). [2] Myers The song “Soul Bossa Nova” was on a game show in Canada called Definition. It was just swinger music. Quincy Jones had to remaster it, I remember, because it speeds up and slows down. To this day people still talk to me about it. I will always be indebted to Mike Myers for bringing me onto the show. I love those teeth and I’m probably most proud of those out of any of project. What film or television series have you enjoyed working on the most?
