A horizontal Murphy bed functions the same way a vertical model does, but the orientation of the bed is sideways instead of up and down. This means that when you open the bed, the side will be next to the wall. For some spaces, especially those with low ceilings, this configuration may be a better fit. The user also doesn’t have to reach as high to unfold the bed, which may be more convenient.

Paint or stain the wood and add leg support based on the instructions that are included in the kit. While Murphy beds are already designed in an attempt to optimize space, Canora Grey’s Barham Bed takes that to a new level. By design, it just looks like an understated but elegant chest, measuring under 6 feet in width. Though it folds up into one wonderfully compact piece of furniture when not in use, the solid wood and metal frame of this bed is substantial, weighing 160 pounds in total. The main disadvantage of this design is that it takes up more wall space. But it’s the only option you have if the room doesn’t allow a horizontal fold. c.
