About this deal

I’m a huge fan of this thriller writer’s clever, serpentine stories. When the waste ground behind his house is approved for development, it spells trouble for Alex, who is hiding a big secret – but what? Just when I thought I’d figured it out, along came another twist! -- Good Housekeeping PS: I never give trigger warnings, but you may get a laugh out of this one: I think I have a phobia of house guests that overstay their welcome, because there was a part in the book where I felt myself becoming very anxious, with sweating palms and a racing heart, and perhaps discovering some slightly murderous tendencies within my own heart towards one particular character. If you share that sentiment, have a stiff drink ready before you delve in! The trail. Right.’ This was as much as he could muster before his body went into a kind of arrest, a frankly terrifying sensation, as if he might look down and see his limbs crumble to dust in front of him.

MY THOUGHTS: I loved that opening paragraph; it's so full of promise. Unfortunately it's a promise that isn't delivered. The Only Suspect kept me guessing all the way through. It’s the book version of a Rubik’s Cube with so many unexpected twists and turns. An adrenaline-burner for sure!” The plot is clever, the characters are unpleasantly credible and the revelations give the tiniest sense of reassurance -- Literary Review

The Only Suspect by Louise Candlish Your Preview Verdict: The Only Suspect by Louise Candlish

A nature trail is being constructed near Alex and Beth’s home. Most of the neighbourhood is looking forward to this by Alex is terrified that a secret will be unearthed. THE AUTHOR: Before writing fiction, I studied English at University College London and worked as an illustrated book editor and advertising copywriter. While I didn’t warm to the characters and found them quite unlikeable, certainly none that I would like to be friends with. Louise Candlish does a brilliant job of showing how the characters found themselves suddenly entangled in extreme situations in this complicated and elaborate story. Bestselling author Lucy Foley is a huge fan of Louise Candlish’s writing and so am I! The Only Suspect is a tantalising domestic mystery that had me on edge from the very beginning of this story to the end. A tale of jeopardy, passion, fixation, lies, deceit and envy, The Only Suspect is a duplicitous piece of modern psychological fiction.Wow! The last 1/3 of this book was amazing and I couldn’t put it down. A great slow-burn thriller. This book had so many twists and turns. It was well written and I needed to keep reading to find out the truth. I did find the first 1/3 of the book dragged on a bit too long. Tara, WA, 4 Stars Surprising, intoxicating, elliptical and vexing, The Only Suspect is a five star read from Louise Candlish.

The Only Suspect by Louise Candlish | Goodreads

Alex isn’t particularly likeable and I suspect Candlish does this on purpose. He implies he kinda ‘fell into’ his relationship and marriage to Beth. This phrase stayed with me, “… he caught himself wondering how he had come to have this wife and not the one he’d once fantasized about.” #charming Hi, I am an avid reader and have been all my life. I put it down to being an only child and having a teacher for a mum. The idea of this blog is to share my passion for reading and review new and upcoming books as well as those that may have been out for several years. The Only Suspect is a perfectly executed thriller, an unpredictable ride that will enthral both fans and new readers alike. Ik had namelijk een vermoeden en dit bleek gedeeltelijk goed, MAAR... er kwam op het einde echt nog een plottwist aan die ik dus absoluut niet aan had zien komen! The story that unfolds is taut and complex, and the sense of impending doom kept me riveted. There are plenty of secrets to be unearthed, and both timelines are equally compelling. There are plenty of twists and red herrings along the way but the final reveal blew me away.

The Only Suspect by Louise Candlish - Fantastic Fiction

Alex and Beth live in an affluent suburb and seem to be living an idyllic existence. That is, until a nature trail is being developed in the area. What might be uncovered? Whatever it is, it has Alex spooked and on edge. Beth can’t understand his sudden interest in the nature trail and whilst Alex is keeping an eye on things, she is concerned that he doesn’t want to be photographed. I was completely pulled in by the story and the layers of clever plotting; the twists and turns - though well set up, took me completely by surprise and I found myself staying up late to finish it, utterly absorbed by the excellent story telling Alex is living his best suburban lief with Beth until the creation of a nature trail is announced, threatening to expose decades-old secrets. The Only Suspect is a satisfying thriller that moves at such a pace to keep the reader engaged the whole way through. There are just enough hints throughout that you can’t trust any of the characters, which adds to the sense of dread and the need to know what’s really going on. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and devoured it in a couple of days. Vanessa, QLD, 5 StarsThe characterisation is very good, there’s a good range, from one who is gullible, one who seems guileless, one to fear, one or two to clench your fists in irritation and one master duper. The author certainly keeps you on your toes with this bunch! This time its Silver Vale, where the big news is that the local council has finally given the go-ahead for a nature trail near their home. Beth was on the committee, and has no idea that her husband is terrified by this turn of events for their neighbourhood. This adds to the tension which Candlish dials up as the story progresses. Ever since that damn campaign was launched two years ago, it had only ever been a matter of time, for Beth’s compadres – Dulcie and Samira and the rest of them – were typical thirty- and forty-something Silver Vale women and mostly mums, which was to say committed to the point of psychotic. Alex lives a comfortable life with his wife Beth in the leafy suburb of Silver Vale. Fine, so he’s not the most extrovert guy on the street, he prefers to keep himself to himself, but he’s a good husband and an easy-going neighbour.
