The six new book picks provide an interesting mix of genres and authors and the aspiration is to get people reading and trying books that they might not otherwise have picked up. Their coming-of-age has the emotional intensity that made Normal People so mesmerising but as Another Life unfolds, and the characters mature, it throws more adult complications into both Anna and Nick’s lives that change their family circumstances and priorities and give the novel a far more rounded feel.

Nick’s family background is complicated and the opening chapters give some indication of the weight of responsibility on his shoulders. I usually become frustrated reading about missed chances and poor communication between a couple but it was so understandable in their circumstances.
