About this deal

I mean, I think that there’s a definitely a tonal vibe between the two…and yet the stories, the interpretations, the population of characters, all that stuff couldn’t be more different. Feels like it's longer than it should be, and there's a romantic development that is foisted upon the reader, unconvincingly. The main draw is Andrea Sorrentino’s art but details here and there show that Mattson Tomlin has put some thought into his realistic take on the character, and it’s a fairly coherent narrative. It was also helped immensely by the incredible art from Andrea Sorrentino, who continues to be one of my favorite artists in all of comics.

The story centres on Bruce Wayne, who has only Batman for a couple of years, and during one night after being a bloody pulp, he finds himself reunited his old childhood psychologist, Dr. He’s a scary “I am the night, I am vengeance” kind of guy, but also a real empath, who cared about people in a way, that’s kind of disarming and not so on-the-nose. The added effect increases the impact of the words on the page in the same way a gorgeous score may take a good film to the next level. Leslie Thompkins, far from being another surrogate parent to Bruce who is largely supportive of his crusade, is depicted here instead as someone who refuses to blindly enable his violent vigilantism and forces him into therapy by threatening to expose his true identity once she discovers it. Batman confronts Alex McCard, but Alex tells Batman that the victims were free after Batman and Jim Gordon exposed that three criminal families had 5 judges on their payroll, and the imposter is killing the victims to clean up Batman and Gordon's mistake. At this point, the version that I like the most, and that I respond to the most is the one that feels real, that feels like this could actually happen… I love the first hour of Batman Begins.

And then later on Batman breaks into Wesker’s facility effortlessly but he needs Wong’s help to break into the GCPD?Detective Blair Wong knows his true identity, and is ambivalent about him at best, further complicating his situation. His single ally, Commissioner Gordon, has been run out of Gotham after only a year of Wayne’s war on crime, with a wave of criminals put back on the street for his mistakes. This narrative element works superbly, keeping the reader on their toes as bits of knowledge are revealed. They can be the characters that just make everything okay or show up and save the day and offer the words of counsel when they need to. This is obviously outside of traditional DC continuity, but do you see a world where you could continue this story?

Bruce dresses up as Batman, and realizes that the majority of the victims were sentenced by the same judge name Alex McCard. Batman/Bruce are portrayed much differently than before, as Bruce is an enraged youngster pushing everyone away from him including Alfred. It just kind of felt like there’s room for some more of those…[and] the movie is so much Matt Reeves, and there’s ideas that I was having that don’t apply to the movie. Detective Wong learns that someone dressed as Batman has been killing innocent people and Gotham City Police Department decides to arrest the Batman killer. With a lot of the spreads, they’re so detailed, and so mindbogglingly intricate and perfectly executed. You can just kind of look at that as, “oh, he got angry, and now he’s taking out his anger in this way.
