The thing that I remember most about Martin is him being totally wiped out by Porte and showing no resentment for the fact. When I started watching races more regularly I for some reason developed an almost instant antipathy to Dan Martin.Within the first few pages Martin is discussing how riders can be reluctant to disappoint fans, referencing both the support and backlash he experienced for criticising the inclusion of gravel in the 2022 Giro d’Italia. Many anecdotes get a paragraph or two but could be a whole chapter although the hardback already runs to 300 pages. This week at Cyclist, even we’ve been struggling to recover from the crazy effort made by Filippo Ganna to set a new Hour record with a distance of 56. He’s had an interesting column over the years with Pro Cycling magazine and recent media appearances, like The Cycling Podcast, are always worth listening.

That’s something I can understand, and I feel like too many cycling books I’ve read seem to centre on the themes of either suffering or doping. Please Note: By their very nature, all signed books will have been handled several times before they get to you. What Martin is telling us in Chased by Pandas and what Martin told Kimmage five years earlier, they’re substantially the same, in both he’s telling us he hasn’t really used painkillers save for the odd paracetamol every now and again.
