Each rum is aged in a charred oak barrel having previously been used to mature bourbon whiskey, and is also created to comply with kosher standards. Most recently, 30 of the world’s most talented bartenders competed in the global final of Flor de Caña’s Sustainable Cocktail Challenge, a competition that promoted the creative use of sustainable ingredients in cocktails. This addition to Flor de Caña's Centenario collection showcases the Nicaraguan distillery's carbon-neutral, and fair trade certification! Rich and sweet with enough oak-spice warmly pushing through the flavor profile, most any discerning rum-drinker alive would be happy with this in his/her glass!

It’s an admirable effort, as according to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization, reducing global food waste is one of the best ways to fight climate change. Now the award-winning rum producer is increasing its efforts to promote these sustainable endeavours across the wider spirits industry, from distillers to bartenders – and even consumers. In the nose initially you can smell alcohol, with a water spoon opens and the sweetness become, sugar cane of course, the alcohol still present but you can start feeling this balance between the alcohol and the sugar/woody notes, beautiful to drink straight up or in a elegant coctel. In fact, if I’m not sipping the sugarcane-based spirit neat, I am likely to mix the seven year añejo with club soda and a squeeze of lime; refreshing, light and a thirst-quencher that shatters the time-old stereotype that rum is only used in sweet drinks.

Flor de Caña Rum: Sustainable and Natural Flor de Caña Rum: Sustainable and Natural

When Alfredo Francisco Pellas Canessa left his native Italy for Nicaragua in 1875, rum wasn’t on his mind.Flor de Caña ( Spanish for " sugarcane flower") is a brand of premium rum manufactured and distributed by Compañía Licorera de Nicaragua which is headquartered in Managua, Nicaragua and dates back as far as 1890. The alcohol is naturally aged in small, white oak premium bourbon barrels sealed with Nicaraguan plantain leaves,” Solórzano says. It demonstrates not only the company’s commitment to environmentalism, but to the economic and social wellbeing of those who craft the rum.
