As a Native American person, I am reflexively suspicious of fiction about Indians, especially in this genre, because it is easy for non-Indians to caricature people whose culture they can’t really identify with.

Omri's chest that he and Patrick used before was destroyed in the tornado they accidentally brought back and it isn't big enough to hold them.This is only one example of how Banks has made her book a metaphor for how ignorant white people have subjugated and marginalized the Indian populations of America by refusing to understand, listen to, or accommodate Indian heritage. It helped me see these words should not define the people they're directed at, but rather the people they issue from. I also like the way Omri grows to understand that his actions have consequences on others, although I think the consequences in book three are quite severe for a grade school age boy. That night, Omri and Patrick, along with Little Bear and Boone, watch a program on TV, the movie " The Last of His Tribe" and that shows a relentless slaughter of Apaches by cowboys. Not only that, but the Indian in the book, Little Bear, speaks in very broken English, and he has a seemingly simplistic, stereotypical outlook.

Banks draws a perfect Little Bear and a perfect Omri, particularly in their dialogue and their relationship with one another; in fact, all of the characters are outstandingly portrayed. Omri opens the cupboard, introduces Little Bear and starts telling the entire story to his father from scratch. Omri shares the magical cupboard’s secret with his close friend named Patrick and as the series proceeds further, they learn a lot more about the powers of the cupboard, like the power of transporting people through history and bringing them back.

There are often realistic concerns about the little toy-men; whether or not they can be hurt, how they feel, and the worries and cares they endure. The Indian in the Cupboard has received several literary awards across the years and is becoming regarded as a classic in children's literature. The one thing I liked about this book, and the only reason I give it 2 stars instead of 1, was how it tackled the way Indians were treated, both in real life and in films. He doesn’t seem to grasp the danger in people finding out about the cupboard and the living figures. Omri’s headmaster lurks outside Omri’s house to find out what he is up to, but he gets hit by debris and loses a part of his memory. During the repair work on the house’s roof, the repairmen find a mysterious box and a journal and hand it over to Omri.Omri and Patrick intervene aggressively in Little Bear's home world, Kirkus observed in contrast to the first book, noting "Feisty, likable characters and the precise logic by which Banks evolves events from her premises make this one of the better recent fantasies.
