If I had to point out anything negative about this game (and I almost hate to do it), it might be that the text on the cards could probably have been made a little larger. During the game, you’ve still got a Lookout phase (where players draw cards to determine which ones to keep) and an Action phase, with Action cards that can be tapped, Buildings that can be Razed, and Fields that can be Harvested. This review is based on a full demonstration during the UK Games Expo and was very close to the final version, as such the final product may look, smell, feel or play completely differently to that experienced. The Barbarians are very worker heavy, which gives them a certain flexibility – we can trade two workers for any of wood, stone, food, or the draw of a card.

Next, they expand their Empire by harvesting fields to get more resources, building buildings to gain new abilities, and creating various constructions to gain victory points. Action Phase: beginning with the start player, each player will take turns performing a single action at which point it becomes the next person’s turn. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. From game to game, players' empires will advance, reaching new eras, goals, technologies, discoveries, and provinces.

The fourth dice is the worker dice and will determine how many actions you can take in a round, between three and five with four being the most common result. The combination of the three different intertwined mechanics creates a rather complex and altogether pleasant labyrinth of planning, choices and decisions.

It offers 48 unique Village sheets – all with different buildings – so each time you play, you are challenged with a different situation. Each card has three different ways you can use it: Make a deal for a free resource every round, construct the building to gain its effect or raze it for a one time resource bonus. And if you are going to sail off and conquer a land why not go to one of the Distant Lands which are by far the more bountiful. And speaking of the clans, the game comes with six different clans and each one of them really does play differently. Choosing the faction is only the first step, though, as each faction can be played using one of the two separate and unique decks. But, as each round goes by and your empire begins to inflate and expand, the action really ramps up and it becomes a challenge to try to squeeze as much out of the turn as possible. He and his wife Merry were visiting the Chicago area the weekend before Gen Con, and we were treated to a learning session with Ignacy’s latest game creation: Imperial Settlers.

The rule book is nicely illustrated and has a personable quality that I always enjoy from Portal Games but there did seem to be an omission in some of the advanced rules regarding the villager sheet. There are only five rounds in the game, and every single one of them needs you to play at least as perfectly as your opponent. Empires of the North is similar to the base game in one very important area: turns are snappy, at least until they are not.Or you can use actions to harvest from any of the fields to which you can access using a bridge that has been completed. This is a huge honor for us and we couldn’t be happier to be included on their list with the amazing wealth of top-notch games published in 2014.
