I am listening to it for about 2 weeks and it stayed powered On all this time to burn-in all those capacitors and warm-up the rest of the circuitry. I feel D70 is staying somewhere in the middle, as it is neither too fast nor too slow. On rare occasions I wanted my music slamming me harder and on other occasions to slow it down a bit. D70 can change its pace, rhythm and timing depending on the music it is playing. On the inside D90 uses the flagship AK4499 DAC chip – just a single unit, plus 4 op-amps are needed to convert its current output to a voltage output. D70S on the other hand has two pieces of a lower grade AK4497, but it doesn’t need those additional 4 op-amps, so the signal path is actually shorter and a bit clearer. Both devices have the same remotes, the same monochrome OLED screens, the same menus and the same build-quality which I always liked. Now, here comes a huge surprise which I am really excited about. By now, I’ve tested several power amplifiers with bookshelf and stand floor loudspeakers that were driven by DACs with variable volume levels (with preamplifier circuits). From them all, the ones that worked best were those that could go higher than 4V on its XLR outputs, they were bigger and deeper sounding, had more flow to them, they were more holographic and more natural sounding to me. I am extremely happy that Topping decided to increase its output voltage from 2V to 2.5V on its RCA output and from 4V to 5V on its XLR output. I am pretty sure that D70S would work better with power amplifiers compared to D90 if a dedicated preamp is not being used at all. If I’m adding a preamplifier into the chain like Benchmark HPA4 or Topping Pre90, then there isn’t much of a difference between D70S and D90 in a loudspeaker setup.

Szerencsémre, vagy ez inkább egy átok, nem is tudom, kaptam a kábelek mellé kölcsön a Core Audiotól egy USB Bridge-t, az náluk a Karuna névre hallgat. Ez az az eszköz, ami fogadja a lapoptól jövő USB jelet, majd átalakítja S/Pdif jellé, amit tovább viszünk a DAC-hoz. Sajnos, a Karuna sokkal tisztább, kifinomultabb, torzítatlanabb, jobb a térábrázolása, és egy egyértelműen nagyobb a dinamikája – a halk, finom kis részletek átadásának irányában. Sajnos, mert többe kerül, mint maga a DAC. Átdugva az Entreq B dugóját vissza a DAC-ba, minden kicsivel kisebb, kicsivel izgágább (nem a jó értelemben) és nyersebb. Jó hifi, a High-End Audio után. If you are newcomer around here, I will just remind you that Element X for me is among the best sounding ESS Sabre-based DAC I had the pleasure of listening, it is quite a different animal compared to other ESS Sabre designs, it is technical and musical in the same time.

Bluetooth 5.0

The Topping D70s offers a couple of PCM filters to fine-tune the signature of the DAC. There are 6 filters in total. Mode 1 to 6. Mode 3 is the default filter. I honestly do not dwell on these as they tend to do more harm than good, however, I liked the filter mode 4. I will talk about it in the sound section. There are couple more subsections in the menu, the majority of them being related to the IIS interface. Another great feature of the D70s is the ability to auto-standby. I wish the SMSL SU-9 had this feature too. It is just so practical. On the wrong setup Arya will sound cold and lifeless, it can be even forward and cramped with the wrong source. D70 is brightening the day a little bit for them, it adds some midrange magic, a weightier tone, a little bit of substance and opens up the window for a wider soundstage and for a deeper sound. The Topping D70 came dangerously close to unseating every other DAC. Its full output distortion is a few dB worse than the best so it didn't get there. But in all other respects, the D70 produces exceptional measured performance. Its crown jewel is exceptionally quiet noise floor that creates one of the best dynamic ranges I have measured. Use of AKM chip takes advantage of that to produces exceptionally clean performance where your volume control normally would be.D70s has a built-in volume control function to achieve the volume adjustment from -99dB to 0dB. Thus we can directly connect D70s to amplifier, pure power amplifier and active speakers, and control the volume by remote control or button, So as to comfortably enjoy the music. D70s also has the function of volume control off. It keeps the max output so that D70s could be worked as a pure DAC. The USB decoding chip is the famous XU208 from XMOS, together with custom drivers from Thesycon, D70 can natively decode DSD512 (basically a sample rate that is 512 times that of CD) and PCM up to 768 kHz at 32 bits. Since D70 has the same depth as Benchmark HPA4 and almost the same width, I decided to use it not only with my KEF LS50W active loudspeaker system but in a headphone-based setup as well. I will not split my listening tests into how it sounded with headphones or speakers, because it sounded the same in all of those instances so I will just continue describing what I’ve heard. The D70 comes with a new revision of their standard remote control and remedies some issues customers have had. Namely, it comes with a pair of separate AAA batteries instead of coin cells which had come missing in some of their other products. Along these lines, there is now a red LED that lights up when you push a button so you can easily tell if you have an issue with the remote or the main unit if you can't control it. They both worked well in my testing. On faster paced music Element X will be always the winner with its hard-hitting nature and great slam, it sounds too engaging at times. D70 is somewhat calmer and smoother that worked better with slower paced music.

USB XMOS Interface

Their D70 line is simply soul grabbing and easily the most natural and smooth sounding from their entire line-up Finally, we have arrived to the centerpiece of what is making the Topping D70S special, as even without a proper burn-in and even from the first day of listening, it presented itself as smooth sounding, but also very well spread, airy, holographic and ethereal sounding. Literally all AKM designs are impressively good in here, but double-AKM design are something else entirely, almost at the same level with top R2R DACs that I’ve tried like Denafrips Venus and Audio-GD R7. I’m yet to hear a double-AKM design that isn’t impressive in terms of scale, that will probably never happen. IEMs: FiiO FD5, FA9, FH7, Meze Rai Penta, Rai Solo, LittleDot Cu KIS & lots of other lower tiered ones Note that the D70 is a new product so I can't vouch for its reliability in the field as yet. My sample worked beautifully so no concerns from this one unit.
