About this deal

Zinc plated coach bolts are ideal for indoor applications. Our M12 4.8 zinc plated coachbolt with nut is our best-selling zinc plated coach bolt. In addition to this, we also have available other zinc plated coach bolt sizes, from M6 zinc plated coach bolt to M20 zinc plated coachbolt. If you do use bolts, I'd use lots of 1/4" bolts and big washers, and again in a "W" pattern. The idea here is for the bolts to clamp the new piece tightly to the old, not for the bolts to bear the load in shear. Whilst timber floors and their connection details should be designed by a competent person, the ‘Eurocode 5 Span Tables (4th edition)’ published by TRADA offers good advice on typical connection details for solid timbers, such as the sizes of nails or bolts and their location and centres. Some of the key parts of this guidance document in relation to connecting trimmers or trimming joists are summarised below:

No notching or drilling of trimmers or trimming joists should be carried out unless proven by calculation, other than to accommodate the flanges of joist hangers. Further reading And finally, if you can do a visual inspection of your floor joists and find that some are rotten in places, or have soft spots due to moisture damage. It is important to repair those joists as they’ve lost some ability to handle a proper load. In those instances, sistering the damaged joist is required. Building Code for Sistering Joists The residential building code does not have a section on sistering joists because it is not standard in new residential construction. Homes are meant to be built on single joists at set spacing – sistering only comes into play if the home has been damaged or improper construction techniques were used, which the building code does not cover. Eurocode 5 Span Tables 4th edition for solid timber members in floors, ceilings and roofs for dwellings, August 2014, BM Trada, ISBN: 978-1-909594-14-2, Published by BM TRADA Interested in this sort of thing? For a full sister or doubled joist, three 16d common nails every 16-inches is acceptable. It should be noted that hammering will put additional stress on the piece being sistered. You may choose to predrill and use two 3-inch lag screws or 4-inch bolts every 24-inches instead.

So if I have this you're not sistering the joist along it's entire unsupported span, you're attaching a repair section to stiffen it in the damaged area. Therefore, the notched member has never done much for the structural integrity of the roof. That is to say, it does not have much load on it. There is no mention of sag in your original OP. If the entire ceiling is sagging, it’s not due to this notch, it’s due to the small roof joists. It is recommended that sistered or double exterior joists be covered with a waterproof membrane or tape. The material will prevent moisture and debris from becoming trapped between the planks and causing rot.

Prevention of Movement: With its secure bolt and nut system, this connector set prevents unwanted movement or shifting of the joist, ensuring a stable and rigid connection. There are many methods for sistering a joist, and not all involve dimensional lumber – but using the same sized lumber is the most common method. Plywood, OSB, and even metal flitch plates can also be used as a “sister” to an existing wood joist. In other words, these will be 2x2 trimmers on top of the existing beams, as well as new 6x2 running alongside the existing joists and the 2x2 trimmers will also be mitred into these - I am thinking of dropping this latter idea though and just going for the 2x2 trimmers running perpendicularly to the existing joists... Use of nails and bolts is preferred to screws. The shear holding power of nails is far superior to screws, and joists deal with significant shear – vertical – forces.

I am simply trying to go the extra mile with soundproofing as I am still at the stage where the floor is not down yet and thought that raising the floor would help - do you think I should place the 2x2 timbers sitting on the exist. joists on rubber washers? For many, removing so many pipes, wires, and ducts leads people to partially sister a joist. This is an option, but know that for optimal support of your subfloor, running a sistered joist the entire length of the original joist is recommended. 2. Measure and Cut New Joist So a 2×12 joist with a 10-foot span between supports could cantilever 4-feet. The reality is between 3’-1” and 4’-6” depending on the type of wood and spacing between joists. Similarly, a 2×8 could cantilever between 1’-5” and 2’-4” based on wood type and spacing.

The M12 nut is included to securely fasten the bolt to the joist. Its reliable quality ensures a tight connection, preventing any unwanted movement or weakening of the joint. One of the most common ways to fix a sagging floor joist is to pair it with another piece of dimensional lumber of the same length and width. This additional piece of lumber is then mechanically fastened with nails or bolts to the sagging joist. Pairing the old joist with a “new” joist is called “sistering” a joist. If you happen to have LVL floor joists, which are uncommon due to their cost, then the process of sistering them would be similar to sistering dimensional lumber. If you are able, find lumber that is the same width as your LVL joist.

Sistering floor joists is an extremely effective method for fixing a broken floor joist of any kind. Still, it can also be a fairly laborious process as you may have to remove a finished ceiling, wiring, plumbing, HVAC, or other utilities that pass through the problem joist. Why Do You Need to Sister a Floor Joist? When nailing a sistered joist, alternate top, middle, bottom every 6”. This will look like a zig-zag of nails across the sistered joist. On either end of a partial sistered joist, a couple of inches from the end of each side of the sistered joist, put 3 nails – top, middle, and bottom. The nailing pattern for sistering depends on the type of sistering, and how much space you have to work. Swinging a hammer between joists may be difficult depending on joist spacing and ground clearance. It’s also often more difficult to drive nails into aged wood. Code does dictate that all floor joists should bear a minimum of 3” onto concrete and at least 1.5” onto the wood. This goes for sistered joists, as well. Even if the old joist does not bear to that extent, the new joist must. Install the posts and beam at the appropriate distance. Slide the new joist onto the existing beam and sister it to a joist with appropriate fasteners. Since both ends of the new joist will be supported, the sistering overlap is only the width of the beam plus any existing cantilever. Repairing or Strengthening a Joist
